Diana,

In this posting (final read), you so eloquently, describe an Episcopalian legacy of ...loss. I almost wrote pain, but loss better describes (and encompasses pain, too) what not only Carlson but millions of mainliners -- Catholics, Southern Baptists, Methodists come immediately to mind --are experiencing today.

This was truly a sad read, on so many levels.

It was long.

I was very disappointed that the Penguins missed the playoffs. They'll be back next year. As for your article, it is kind of interesting but way to long. No one wants to read that much about Tucker Carlson.

Thank you for this article. For some reason I thought TC had left the Episcopal Church a couple of years ago.

Wow I read all the comments before I started writing this. and I listened to Tucker's clip that you shared. I am taking deep breaths !!! I have insights and empathy I did not have before. I am grateful for this hard lesson and being a member of your community. So much to work through for all of us. Thank you . I am going to try and share this with some people who might have some new !understandings. Happy Birthday to the Cottage! It has been and is a wonderful ride . Glad you are a part of my circle as as a life and hope giver.

As Richard Rohr so often says, "If you do not transform your pain, you will surely transmit it."

Thank you, Diana, for this excellent piece.

Excellent analysis. There is no question that those in a toxic system like the one you have described are adversely affected. Carleton presents as deeply wounded. He is clearly a hypocrite who is oddly in need of the Episcopal Church. A very sad person.

All of that and he was abandoned by his mother at a young age. Lots to be angry about.

Another "What About?" What about the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of indigenous people forced into denominational school so they could be "Christianized" and made to blend into what is meant to be "American", all in the name of Jesus Christ. I think we do know from those well documented (though not talked about until now) experiences and the horrific impact on generations, even some to be born. Some cycles are not easily broken when the hate and "otherness" are still a part of the "American" culture. Oh and "What About?" Bibles given to slaves with so many verses left out so that Christ's saving grace could not fully reach them even if they wanted it to, let alone those who had their own way to God.

If we look at this incident as a stone dropped in a pond we see the big splash in the middle but also the ever expanding rings that reach us who think we’re safe standing on the edge. But this is only one stone thrown into the cohort pond of our culture and our children. The rings have become waves, like a tsunami that is overtaking our country and our civilization. I despair at who we have become.

The way you described the tentacles of sex assault poisoning out through generations felt sickening. Thank you for putting together the pieces, and for reminding us that every single soul on earth is beloved.

a quote for Tucker to consider..."People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character" Ralph Waldo Emerson)

It’s a truth we seem to have to learn over and over, that everyone makes sense. This article is an important piece, helping to move us from our own antipathy which contributes to the problem, to setting Carlson in a much wider context. Rather than contending with a singular and confounding source of evil in the world, we’re confronted with a system for which we’re all responsible. Thank you for this.

Thank you for always providing us with trustworthy background information. It's what distinguishes you as a credible resource. "Hurt people hurt people." A wound that goes unattended has the potential of remaining sensitive, weary, and defensive of future reocurrences. Sad!

I have wondered all my life how the misogyny of the Catholic Church has formed me as a person. I think of it as the water you swim in. Rarely do you see it.
