I will try to read this every day !I live in the bizzar Nazi turning state of Florida.. And the face of the white fur wearing frantic creature at the State of the Union speech last evening is do frightening. Dark is everywhere!
I must remember to shine my little light. Thank you both for sharing this.
Will the Monday Lenten class be recorded; I would love to have there but I have a Lenten Study that I teach on Monday nights. Thanks, Rev. Patti Haaheim
Sending a Spark to shine in the Dark no matter how far or to NOT know what that spark might mean to someone is the gift. I have read your post every day since it appeared and love the many lights of ......ending with the LIGHT OF LOVE. I will keep these words close and pray them often. Thank you.
I love this lighthouse imagery, Cathleen! Something I noticed in my study of this passage this time through is that all the you’s are plural, as in you’se guys, or y’all! So we are all the light of the worlds as we work together to stock the lighthouse, to be the light together! Even the partnership between you and Diana in presenting this story, it a collective enterprise. It brought me to the idea of Tikkun Olam that I first learned from Rachel Naomi Remen: together we gather up the broken fragments of light that shattered after creation, and as we gather them together and point to the light in one another we do the work of healing and repairing the world.
A beautiful reflection that I will save and reread often. I love the metaphor of the light house and of course the beautiful picture. Thank you for sharing “your light” !
I love the list near the end of different ways to “be the light”. During a very difficult year in 2022, I lost that light for a long time, giving up hope for the first time in my 60+ years. That light was given to me in the ways you described until I found my way back again!
Thank you so much for this reflection, rich in meaning and beautifully written. I threw out the end of my sermon just before worship, and quoted your last 2 graphs instead - with attribution and an acknowledgement that you are more poetic than I. And now I have a documentary to look up! Blessings all around!
Great thanks, Teri, for your offered image of lighthouses! One other thing I did this Epiphany, was to thanks my many secular friends for the Light they bear and reflect. Important, I believe, to perceive the abundant light that shines, and acknowledge it!!
I felt the story of the light house had many messages; one being it's transformations to stay useful, It had to keep moving from one means of heat to present day electricity. We also need to do that in our understanding of theology and not get stuck in the past. A beautiful story with many messages.
Is there enough light in this nation today for Americans to include more people historically excluded, because of their race, ethnicity, language, religion, immigrant status, class, sexual orientation, gender, education, and ability? I hope so...

Thank you for this wonderful reflection. May my small light shine brightly in this world.
Beautiful and inspiring, Cathleen Safani!
A great meditation on the constancy of God and the inevitability of change. Thank you!
