Oddly enough, I was named Mary. But if I were to choose a new name that explains where I am in my journey, it would be Faith and/or Hope. It’s been a long year of discovery part of which have been fueled by yours, Brian McClaren and Father Richard Rohr’s books (and many others) podcasts. I was a teenager in the sixties growing up in an extremely conservative environment. I am no longer that person.

Thank you!

Thanks to the spiritual nurturing while navigating 2022, a year of mixed healing and pain. Looking forward to a better year in 2023 with help from The Cottage. May peace and comfort spread throughout the world as we enter the new year. Alyce Kaehler, an elderly follower who lives in Colorado

I always appreciate how you bring freshness to the text.

What name? I would use my given name! Mary Elizabeth,

Yet in the South I would have been called “Little Mary” and they would call Mother “Big Mary,” She approved of my being named after her, but she refused to be called Big Mary this the nickname “Betty” !

I did away with Y and use Bette!

I love all the woman in history who are Mary or Elizabeth! What models for all of use.

Happy and Health New Year to all the Cottage family. Enjoy many adventures.

Sorry hit the wrong button...where was I...their true name has been. I believe Jesus, the Word became flesh and dwelling among us, God with us, claims my child and all children of God who travel a path to true identity by choosing a new name.

If I were to choose a new name, I would choose the one my parents gave me, Mary. Too many Mary's, even in the Bible and yet it one is unique and blessed in their own way.

However, my 21 year old child chose a new name for themselves and I was priveleged to participate in that process. You see, they are non-binary trans-masc and because their father and I divorced they had decided to take my new hyphenated name. The courts finally got to their case and forgot to alert my child and our lawyer of the hearing. Our lawyer, knowing that the courts had screwed up and frustrated with the time it had taken, pulled the case and is paying for this all new go at it. I asked our lawyer, knowing that my child desired a new name, if they might change not just their last but also their first. And she said, "Go for it!"

So my beautiful and amazing child will have a new name in this new year. I appreciate your musing today as it reminded me of the sacredness of a name and how sacred this time of helping my child find

I do the Dayspring Word of the Year quiz and my word for this year I'd confidence. When I think of that word I think of Ruth who had the confidence to leave her homeland and follow Naomi and start a new life.

A beautiful way to start the new year is to rethink my name and how my name reflects my actions. Bonita means pretty or beautiful in Spanish. I use Grace ( lower case in my gmail ) to remind me to be graceful as I communicate or try to on the internet. I grew up as a Bonnie which is a whimsical joyful name and as an elder in society I like to incorporate all three names in my actions. Some days bit is hard!!! And then I remember LOVE ❤️ THANK YOU ‘S start for this lovely beginning. 2023 here we are , Joyfully !
