Thank you for sharing. I did not know Hosanna meant 'save me' and that there was another procession reminding them of their fate ...

The last time I saw the film of Jesus Christ Superstar, I realized what bothered me. Christ never was removed from the cross at the end. It really haunted me.

The only problem I ever had with the Jesus Christ Superstar movie was that Jesus had blue eyes. However, I was always a sucker for blue eyed men (I married one), so I was mostly able to overlook it. I still listen to Gethsemane every year on Good Friday. Favorite line, “what we started…” narrowed eyes, “what YOU started, I didn’t start it….”

That was always my favorite song from the album too,Laura.

After our service today we will watch a tape of a "Jesus Christ Superstar" play in which one of our parishioners participated. I'm excited. Blessings to everyone on this Palm Sunday.

Thanks for resharing this, Diana! It's informing my sermon for tomorrow (phew!).

I really appreciate how you see this. I need to read again, so I can envision more fully the idea of two processions. In the past, I learned about how this is a good example of a crowd mentality: how everything was happy at the beginning suddenly turned because people were pulled into a very different way of thinking, and it was so powerful, everyone simply followed.

I have thought a lot about the paradigm-shifting concept of hosanna, thank you. I have also given a lot of thought to the other “parade”. Far from being unattended, I imagined it being well attended by military presence, sycophants, much of the “clergy“, and “wannabes” shouting “Hail Cesar”, and brandishing fists in the air. There are always those who dote on tyrants, out of fear, self interest, or delusion. We’ve seen it throughout history, as we do now. Sometimes the shout hosanna.

Thank you for your wonderful insights, and thought provoking writing.

I'm 64 years old, have attended church almost my whole life and I have never, ever known about the 2 processions. Is that true? If so, it makes so much more sense, along with the rest of the teaching here.

As I will say in my sermon tomorrow, I don't know what evidence Borg and Crossan have to claim both parades happened on the same day (though I wouldn't put it past Jesus to schedule his parade to coincide with Pilate's). Did Pilate bring in extra troops and present a show of force right before the celebration of Passover (a celebration of freedom from an oppressive empire)? I'm certain he did.

He told me that there's not incontrovertible proof of the same time and day -- but, given the purposefulness of Jesus' choices and the overall timing of the week, it is the most likely scenario for the events. (Apparently he's been asked this question in the past!)

I didn't either until 2006 when I read Borg & Crossan, "The Last Week"

Highly recommend!

Diana see how you inspire us. May send gratitude to you and to Richard for planting such seed that are bearing fruit inso many souls. Happy Easter.

Since you mentioned "old time religion" - ponder this. This is literal Bible.

God created man in his own image.

God created Adam with one soul. From Adam came all 8 billion on this planet.

God only created 1 soul in his image - therefore God within creation is the

Totality of the sparks of One Soul = Body of Christ. Creator is Ultimate Mystery beyond creation.

When we kill another, we are killing a piece of our own soul, the One Soul, the Body of Christ.

Mystics know this. Mystics know within themselves they have power for good and evil

and see God playing all the parts in the drama on the planet. That's why they do not judge.

Evil has intention but is unconscious of the part it is playing - it does not understand it

is gripped in the illusion that keeps creation in play.

God is the Ultimate Reality. To see God, we must see through the illusion of our false selves.

Light is equally distributed in all soul sparks. Sometimes it is hard to see it. These are things I believe but cannot prove - there are 8 billion "realities" operating on this planet - only occasional is someone lifted beyond the veils to "see" - for me it is easier to "hear" truth when I hear it.

I'm not posting anymore - I am just commenting on "old time religion." Going deep - now I can breathe.

What is the subscription price?

Diana Butler Bass's avatar

Just click the little "Subscribe" or "Update" button. That gives you all the options, with the levels of subscription prices. (It doesn't subscribe or update you until you choose, click a second button, and follow the directions.) The Cottage is less than one latte at Starbucks per month! I purposefully keep the rates at the lowest possible level.

I love the reference to Jesus Christ Superstar, as that song was going through my head leaving Church Sunday.

And I very much appreciate the explanation of meaning of the Hosana. I’ve always thought it a triumphant Hail. Your explanation makes so much more sense! Thanks always for helping us to think outside the

Box!

I understand. As I just wrote to Hannah about another entry of mine, I can startle people who do not get where I am coming from with my comments. I intend them to be challenging; for people to think and re-think about what I'm getting at. Meanwhile, isn't Diana's "COTTAGE" wonderful?! :-)

❤️ it! I'm doing a sermon series on selected songs from Jesus Christ Superstar for Lent. After seeing the 50th anniversary tour last summer, I went straight to work and we have had so much fun? well meaningful fun looking at the passages from scripture that inform this creative work of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. What an affirmation to see that, like me, Holy Week reminds you of the timeless rock opera. Hosanna Hey-Sana is straight outta Luke's version with the confrontation with the pharisees and no palms just clothes. Love your sermon's Diana, the podcast and your collaboration with McLaren and Tripp Fuller. You are resourcing a new grassroots movement in protestant Christianity in the US. Keep up the good work people are being saved. Hosanna!

I would love to read your sermons. May the seeds of them bare fruit in the souls of those who listen

The last line of the sermon about needing the message "more than ever": I would say "as much as ever."
