Diana, you bailed me out this morning. I got a call this morning at 6:15 am from our rector--he had a miserable cold/flu and asked me, a retired deacon, to take the two services this morning--we were celebrating St. Francis. Knowing there was no time to cobble together a sermon, he suggested the snippet on Francis' life in Lesser Feasts--but I remembered your Professor Higgins/St. Francis piece from last Wednesday. I read it at each service--it was very well received. So THANK YOU for all you do and are. Keep up the important work you do!
Thanks for sharing the clip from “Brother Sun, Sister Moon.” I didn’t see the movie when it came out, but it intrigues me. St Francis’ prayer, “Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace,” has been a touchstone throughout my life, so I plan to check out the movie.
What an interesting and profound contemplation of the pairing of the two films. Thank you for your deep thinking, your eloquent words and your tribute to two holy Francises.
and got no rating at Rotten Tomatoes, which perhaps bodes ill for the quality of the film. But it's only three bucks on Amazon, so I may give it a chance. And the Franciscans like to get Francis out of the birdbath every once in a while.
Thank you for this thoughtful reflection, Diana. And thank you for calling my attention to the Pope's words. He so wisely articulates what is happening in our nation and world around the greed for power. “We need,” declares Pope Francis, “to rethink among other things the question of human power, its meaning and its limits.”
Brother Sun and Sister Moon was also a beautiful visual movie. It also made clear what war can do to Person. In Frances’s case a change of heart. It is one a movie I watch when I need to examine how to live my life. I have failed in giving up as much as he did, but I did force me to look for ways I could serve ad still have a warm bed to sleep in.
I would not have thought about how these 2 stories are connected. I will watch both. Thank you for a beautiful reminder of St Francis, a saint who is even more relevant today than ever.

Beautiful and thank you!
wonderful insight. I was moved by the contrast of "My Fair Lady" and St. Francis. Yes the first will be last and the last first. Amen.
Here's another truly odd couple: Francis and Sultan Malek al-Kamil, (with a very cool and perhaps theologically incorrect smashup of Christian icon with Islamic geometric, non-representational art: https://trinitystores.com/collections/st-francis-and-the-sultan-rlsul
Someone made a movie version of the story in 2016 on Assateague Island with Jeremy Irons as the narrator. The page is mostly empty on IMDB, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5977536/?ref_=tt_urv

Diana, The depth of feelings that the movies brought speaks volumes of you as a person. Thank you for sharing. D
Happy St Francis Day! Thank you for this reflection
Another great song on this theme was by the sublime Rich Mullins band, The Ragamuffins:
