Yes, I grew up in the high desert in central Mexico. There is some stoicism in the desert.

I spent a vacation in Scottsdale once. We stayed at the Princess and drove to Sedona for a day trip. The desert air, beautiful nights, the red rock & humongous cactus gave me a feeling of “Awe”. I think we could all do with a feeling like that about now. Diana, glad you had a chance to connect with your roots. Amidst the political turmoil, and for me Hurricane Ian it’s helps to give ourselves replenishing moments. And to remember God is here in all the moments. Thank you!!

Indeed, God is everywhere. A great comfort to me as my brother (my twin) died this week many miles from me. No thing changes that God is everywhere. Thank you Diana ❤️. The Cottage is a sane life line.

Your twin’s passing hurts my heart for you. God be with you through this time. Glad we can share life and death experience through the Cottage open door. Thank you, Diana for this lifeline.

Please qualify your concern by adding “SOME” to white evangelicals; lest you fall into the sorry mistake of implying that my “white evangelical”

family members aren’t equally disgusted and appalled by Herschel Walker.

(trying/failing to come up with some nice hershel stuff to say, i stumble across this & must pass it on):

The great thing about America is that any citizen of a certain age can run for office. The bad thing about America is that any citizen of a certain age can run for office.

My favorite is the desert father who said "I gave away that Book that ever said to me, 'Give all that thou hast.'"

I forget who said it... a virtue I will never achieve.

I also love the words spoken to Abba Arsenius, quoted by Henri Nouwen in The Way of the Heart: "Arsenius, flee, be silent, pray always...."

I'm from Georgia and everyone I know is voting for Hershel. They don't care about his behavior or his incompetence, they just want to defeat Warnock, a Democrat. They believe once elected he will discover he can't sit still much less concentrate on what is happening in the Senate. He will resign with health reasons and Brian Kemp will replace him with a very conservative friend to fulfil the term. This clearly demonstrates how destructive our tribalism has become.

Ever since I read Thomas Merton's collection of Sayings of the Desert Fathers, "Wisdom of the Desert," that literature has fascinated me. Certain aspects of it are stranger than any science fiction. The late Benedicta Ward, Anglican nun and scholar, has perhaps the most solid volume in English of the Sayings, in Penguin Classics. But IMHO the most lovable collection of material about these ancient monks and nuns of Egypt and the Levant is the classic collection by Helen Waddell, "The Desert Fathers."

I love the desert, as harsh as it may seem at times. It takes me away from the noises of the world and the pressures and expectations of others and leaves me in the quiet presence of God. Looking for his provision (manna) and comfort... I needed this reminder today, thank you!

I have not spent time in a real desert, but the inner urban city has elements of the desert--dying plants, withered grassland, rocky ground, and refuse. We find the "desert" when we need it.
