Thank you and the paid community for sharing the excellent, and also frightening, interview with Dr. Ingersoll. Can this be put in print form for those of us wanting to use it for teaching purposes?
I agree completely with Prof. Ingersoll. I’m pessimistic about the future of this country and the world. Our only hope is that women and people of color can somehow take the reins of government, if it’s not too late already.
A wonderful and enlightening 72 minutes seemed too short on this topic... As much of this sounded a lot like Kristin Kobes Du Mez (and it should) in "Jesus and John Wayne", I was pleased to find you listed in her acknowledgements section. Upon reading your name, her statement "In reality, evangelicals did not cast their vote despite their beliefs, but because of them." came to me and I wondered if that idea may have come from a conversation with you.
I enjoyed the conversation. My only complaint-spending too much time on definitions and too little time on the dangerous, destructive force of CN. One of the most predictive traits of a rigid system, prone to authoritarian rule, is "othering". It's the constant defining and arguing about who's IN and who's OUT. I have never read or heard an Evangelical leader, scholar, or author, who hasn't spent a majority of his or her time "othering". As an Episcopalian outsider, I have observed and at times, been challenged by Evangelical friends and extended family members by this "othering". If I didn't know better, I would surmise, by my observations, that this activity was a sacrament of their faith. I was concerned when Julie and Diana the first 20 minutes of this episode was spent engaging in this same type of behavior. More time must be given to finding ways to slow this dangerous movement and move it back to the fringes.
A second issue I have, is that we not only have to vote. I ask that those that are physically able, volunteer to be trained and work as poll workers. Bannon has activated a who army of armed kooks to intimidate voters. This is already happening in Maricopa County, AZ. The local ABC affiliate has been reporting on this vigilante activity.
Thank you. Her book is on the way to me. I I will also check out the Frontline show you mentioned. However, election work is increasingly demanding each passing hour. 🙏
Please, Diana, could you make your three essays easier to copy by just putting the text of your columns into one Word document, without the additions of logos, photos, comments, etc.? Margaret
Okay, it was worth a try. It is all very important, though, so thanks again for giving us such an enlightening background to the history of the issues. M.
I support the wider distribution of the conversation. It gave important background on very serious current American issues. It is astounding to the rest of the world that in America, the integrity of full adult suffrage could be in peril. Where is the real light on the hill now? I speak as an Australian. M.
This has been my question as well lately. I kind of don't think that most of these folks have thought their theological position through very much nor do they seem to be concerned about consistency. But this does seem like a pretty sweeping change to happen in about a 20 year period.
Many Thanks to Diane and community
BTW-I really appreciated the background. Challenged me to learn morr
Instead of John Pavlovitz "stuff that needs to be said"--this is "stuff that needs to be heard"
Is the conversation sharable (email, text, messenger.. Thanks. Deb Johnson

Here is a podcast episode with Rachel Maddow and Jon Favre in which they talk about the real dangers, and the ancient pull of othering.

I see Evangelicals being easy "marks" for the Trumpist leaders and enablers. Because of the constant shaming and determining who is IN or OUT, it's hard for many to avoid the clarion calls of the authoritarians. BTW, Rachel's new podcast "Ultra" is fantastic. https://rachel-maddow-presents-ultra.simplecast.com/?utm_term=&utm_campaign=Performance%20Max%20-%201%20-%20Podcasting&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=8491135203&hsa_cam=17656011507&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzPrb2tD1-gIVtCatBh3W2gkIEAAYASAAEgI1HvD_BwE

Sorry, Margaret. This platform doesn't work that way.

You can always forward the email to a group of people - and have them read it online if printing it out doesn’t work.
