There's Something About Mary Magdalene
A podcast with Elizabeth Schrader Polczer and Diana Butler Bass
A few weeks ago, The Christian Century asked Elizabeth Schrader Polczer and me to join them for a conversation about Mary Magdalene to kick off their new series, In Search Of. The result is a collegial, embracing, creative, and challenging discussion about women, history, and the road that Christianity didn’t take. We had a fantastic time together in an energetic, thoughtful, and moving hour.
The podcast released today. And I’ve been looking forward to sharing it with you.
There’s new research mentioned in the podcast, including thoughts about Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 5577, a recently published ancient fragment (previously unknown) that may be a conversation between Jesus and Mary Magdalene from the Gospel of Mary. We also talk about the relationship between Mary the Mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene in scripture and church history. You’ll get to hear a couple of places where Libbie and I actually disagree about conclusions — a terrific example of academic friends respectfully engaging difference. (The world needs more of this, thank you!)
Listen in. I know The Cottage community will love it. Thinking about the Bible, theology, and church history — and what might have gone awry — is a perfect way to begin Lent.

Still thinking about this one...
Me either!! She has rocked my world for many years now!! So grateful for Elizabeth’s research and passion.
Also for your wisdom to preach “Mary the Tower!”
For the work of Cynthia Bourgeault, Meggan Watterson, Karen King, Elaine Pagels and many others who have helped to keep her voice in our lives and souls. Grateful.
