I went back to read this today. (3/10/2023) Our beloved dachshund Dixie passed on 2 weeks before Christmas last year. We still have a dachshund at home, which makes the grief a little more bearable. Dixie was 16-1/2. Our remaining sweetie is 14.

What makes it all so poignant is that my husband is dying of metastasized pancreatic cancer. So the doggie loss helps me learn to bear my upcoming loss of my husband of 50 years.Thank you for your gifts of grace and understanding…

Having recently lost my bff CarrieDawn I understand. She came into my life as I was grieving in 2008. I have had many pets and dogs in my lifetime but she was different and she will be forever loved and remembered. Your words written about Rowen were just beautiful.

Peace and prayers as your family moves through this time of his life.

Our dog passed a couple of weeks ago, and even though the end was peaceful, full of love and at home, the grief is still there. I can't express how much reading this has helped. Thank you.

There is a story about a young boy accompanying his parents to have their beloved old dog euthanized. “I know why,” said the boy to the vet , “dogs don’t live as long as people.” “Why is that?” Asked the vet. “Because,” said this wise child, “we all come here to learn to love, and dogs already know how.”

As you suggested, I read the poem you shared - and by it found another...

I am so sorry. I wish they could be with us to our last days too. We have two cats both nearly 16 getting to the end of their days too. I wish you well.

A lovely tribute. We lost Hektor, our Cesky Terrier about three years ago in much similar circumstances. Yes, they live far to short for all the love they offer us.

Diana-

Only someone who has loved and been loved by her/his dog can share your pain- thank you for writing to us about Rowan. I will think of you and yours as these days pass by and Rowan heads for heaven. I believe my dogs are heaven-sent. Each has given me strength, joy, inspiration, and always their hearts and souls. I am grateful for your words and your heart-felt writing today. Much Love-

Oh, so sad.

Thanks for the memory of Marcos Borg. I remember his visits to Santa Barbara and his books that gave me a new life.

I'm so sorry for the impending loss. I'm always conscious, as I look at my own two dogs, that at some point losing them will happen, that à profound grief will be given my little family. I hope that the sour sweet days of waiting, remembering and holding space for Rowan are their own gift, and that grief is not too all encompassing but also not so fleeting that it leaves you with a gap where their should be memories.

My spouse and I are going through the same thing. Our dog, Bert is 16 yrs. old and has Sundown. We know every day we have him is a blessing. He loves to camp and we try to take him as much as we can. Thank you for sharing your story.

This is so heartwarming . I have adopted a semi paralysed dog but he is two years old and I spend moments just watching him and his little moments . Thank you for this .

It is understandable when the word dog is seen in reverse we see God in these beloved creatures.
