The poor and hungry have nothing. These are the people who will seek out a relationship with God in order to have some hope that things will be better. This opens up the possibility of a relationship. The rich have no such need. They are closed off from needing God. The blessing is the need for a relationship that the poor have that the rich do not.

The corrallary is in Matthew 19: "It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." My understanding is that the poor are "especially favored" (Diana's words) because poverty more likely leads to humilt than does wealth. What is impeding the path into the kingdom of God for the rich is both their hubris, their materialism, and their tendency to uncaringly take advantage of systems that disadvantage the poor.
