Get wisdom; get insight: do not forget, nor turn away
from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
love her, and she will guard you.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom,
and whatever else you get, get insight.
— Proverbs 4:5-7
Happy July 4 to my US readers!
And welcome to the Summer Wisdom journey at The Cottage.
This July, I’ll be sharing with you (the paid subscriber community at The Cottage) four wisdom texts — from Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Job.
This isn’t an intense Bible study or deep theological analysis. Instead, in the style of summer reading, these reflections are intended to refresh our spirits and enable us to feel the breeze of God in our lives.
I figure we all need wisdom right now.
WHAT TO EXPECT
On MONDAY July 4, 11, 18 & 25, you’ll get the text for the week without any commentary. Just read it and let it speak to you.
On TUESDAY July 5, 12, 19 & 26, I’ll send out a short reflection on what this particular text means to me and why I chose it.
On WEDNESDAY July 6, 13, 20 & 27, I’ll host an open thread live discussion. If you can’t make the live thread, you can read the comments later and add your thoughts to the discussion. I’ll vary the times to include daytime and evening threads.
That’s it — three days each week for four weeks. One text, a reflection, a thread where you can participate. There will be a couple of surprises along the way as well — including a short recorded conversation with Pete Enns from The Bible for Normal People on wisdom literature (Pete wrote a commentary on Ecclesiastes). Now I’ve blown one surprise!
