I nominate the Terry Fox Memorial statue, near Thunder Bay, Ontario. Terry was ( think 19 years old, and had lost a leg to cancer, when he started his "Marathon a Day" run across Canada. He started in Newfoundland, almost ignored by the press; by the time he reached Toronto he had huge crowds running along with him; just before Thunder Bay, his cancer metastasized, and he went home to B.C. to die. Since then, many thousands have joined in an annual Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research and treatment.

In Berlin they have Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) outside each house or building that was the last voluntary residence of a victim of the holocaust. Each stone is a slightly raised 10 cm square with information about the individual who lived there. What a perfect reminder of the loss of each person and the dangers of a social mindset which denigrates any person.
