We are traveling in Asia, and my wife had a terrible fall and was laid up. I am grateful that, even though we were hours feom medical care, we had a doctor on our trip and we concluded the injury was not life threatening. After that a dozen people stepped in to help and care for her, people that had never met or known her. It was a gift for which I could not show sufficient gratitude. It poured over us daily.

Grateful for the growth in trust and amazing work of forgiveness that comes in the most surprising ways and times.

Very grateful (and a tad surprised) to find the Advent candle holder, candles and pine cones I use to decorate it, in the first place I looked. A sharp contrast to the year the candle holder turned up in the paella pan after a long search.

I’m grateful to making and eating Turkey Carcass soup from “Jane Brody’s Good Food Cookbook” (1985). Our family first tried it at least 20 years ago, and it has become an annual tradition. One year we were eating Thanksgiving dinner away from home, and I asked a friend to save me her leftover turkey bones, with the meat left on them. Another year, I saw my brother-in-law throwing the leftover turkey remains, including one uncarved drumstick, into the trash. I quickly rescued the trash bag to take it home to make soup the next day. One church my husband and I served had an annual Thanksgiving dinner where 6-8 turkeys were cooked. We took the remains home, along with the church’s large cast aluminum pots, to make the soup and share with others. The soup is that delicious. Here’s a link to the recipe, with my notes written on it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i9GNF43O-KT3nmpZnqviOEYj6VwVuVBJ/view?usp=drivesdk

For a year of good health. For a long overdue visit with our son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter in KC. For an upgrade to my cochlear implant that was covered by insurance. For not having any urostomy leaks during our flights to and from KC or when I was away from home. For a visit from our son and granddaughter this past week and their safe flights to and from Rochester. For my husband's recovery from a nasty attack of sciatica and for my being healthy enough to take over most of his chores. For stumbling onto The Cottage.

I am grateful that my niece has committed herself to 90 days of inpatient treatment, and although we miss her terribly this holiday, she is finally seeking wholeness and health. I am grateful that our small remaining family will gather together around the table.

Just Choosing Gratefulness/Gratitude has reopened my eyes to appreciating the people in the community in which I live and the physical comforts of good water, warmth in winter,(it can get cold in Middle GA) When Diana suggested we might pick up a stone while on a walk and keep it as a cue I didn't think I could do that. Then the other day I ran across a stone I had picked up probably as a keepsake from a Native American Shop . It has a stylized bird on it. It fits perfectly in my hand so I am able to slip it in a pocket. I showed it to a couple to see if they were familiar with Native American lore. We all agreed it is a bird. And then she asked me why I was carrying the stone around in my pocket. Her Husband said to keep her on the ground in a stiff wind. We all laughed and then I told them about Grateful and Diana and yes this cue is ballast to remind me about gratitude. And so it does. So the circle may grow in fun ways. AND FOR THAT I AM GRATEFUL. Have a meaningful weekend everyone.

It is a beautiful day with a clear blue sky today and as I breathed in the cool fresh air, I thought of God's gift to us of each breath we inhale. I am grateful for this earth home and the bounty and beauty it offers. I will try and help restore it as my gift back.
