I grew up in a time before you where we had more of a spirituality of country or thought we did. Our earthly home was not secure. We were just 8 months from official involvement in WW2 when I was born. And so it never has been secure nor has it been in more peril--think Climate Change--. Yet I was taught to love this Sojourn through life as a Christian and am greatful for my time here, And yet hope for contributing to our current home while be ready for the next Sojourn! Thank you for your essay as I rethink meanings of Patriotism , Security, and all the other meanings that are throning at us with old and new words. “Christians have rejected the otherworldly orientation of God’s realm by making the kingdom of God coterminous with human society.” I can’t help but wonder how this influenced the doctrine of discovery—which, in turn, led to the colonization of non-European lands, the partial genocide of Native Americans, and the Atlantic slave trade/system.
