I would like to see a similar memorials in each state capital with names of innocent persons (children and adults) killed by assault rifles and other similar high-magazine guns. Lest we forget.

I was so moved by this piece. I had been wanting to visit the Legacy Museum and the Memorial ever since reading Eddie Glaude Jr.'s moving description of it in his book about James Baldwin, Begin Again, and I finally did so last October. Since then, I have been telling everyone I know that they should visit Montgomery and spend time in these spaces. For me, this trip was a kind of pilgrimage--I went to both Selma and Montgomery--and I left with my heart in a vice grip. How easy it is from our position of privilege to relegate the legacy of our history to some vague memory without acknowledging how we are responsible even today for the sins and brutality of the past. As a white person, I will never be able to live in the skin of those who suffered--and who today continue to be lynched, devalued and isolated by our society--but I know one thing...all of us who call ourselves Christian and who live from a place of conscience must not only confront our history but also advocate anew for justice and mercy. The world needs prophets...
