In July, The Cottage hosts a Summer Journey. Last year, we explored the Wisdom literature of the Bible. This summer, we’re revisiting my book Christianity After Religion, published in 2012. The book’s thesis is in the subtitle: “the end of church and the birth of a new spiritual awakening.” We’re looking at that idea ten years on from publication. It is an understatement to say that a lot has happened in the last decade.
Summer Journey isn’t a class — it is a casual refresher that includes reading (if you choose), conversation, and questions to prompt thoughtful spiritual reflection. Like a summer vacation, it is a journey to change our view of things, give new perspective, and see the landscape of our lives more clearly.
Below is a 30-minute video introducing the book — a kind of short orientation to important ideas we will discuss throughout the month. There are two major points in the talk:
Understanding the difference between “revival” and “awakening.”
Outlining the five movements of awakening: a) crisis of legitimacy, b) cultural distortion, c) new vision, d) following a new path, and e) institutional transformation.
Today’s video is free and open to EVERYONE at The Cottage as a “summer journey sampler.” Summer Journey is part of a paid subscription. If you aren’t currently a paid subscriber but want to come along, I invite you to upgrade to a paid subscription.
If you want to participate but can’t afford it, please email us at the.cottage.email@gmail.com. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.
